Tech City UK Blog

April 2017 saw the Tech Nation Visa scheme enter its fourth year, continuing to make it possible for leading tech talent from around the world to come and work in the UK’s digital technology sector.

Demand for the scheme continues to rise. Tech City UK received nearly 400 applications during the 2016/17 financial year, which was just under five times more than the number of applications received during 2015/16.

Last year, India accounted for 21% of all Tech Nation Visa applications, followed closely behind by the United States, with 20%.

The most popular skill sets have been software engineering and software development with 28% of all applicants having significant experience  in this area.

The Tech Nation Visa, which is part of the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa route for digital tech expertise, is not just reserved for technical talent. Applicants with digital marketing and business development experience also make up the top five alongside data scientists and product managers.

The Tech Nation Visa scheme is part of Tech City UK’s mission to ensure that the UK continues to maintain its position as a globally competitive digital economy. We are the designated competent body for digital technology and can endorse applicants who can demonstrate exceptional talent or exceptional promise in the field.

In line with recent Home Office immigration changes, Tech City UK has released updated guidance for the scheme as we continue to work with the Home Office and past applicants to both clarify and simplify the application process.

The future of the scheme looks bright. With another 200 visas ready to be issued by the Home Office in 2017/18, demand looks set to continue being high.

As the 2017 Tech Nation Report highlighted, over 50% of the UK digital tech sector identify a shortage of highly skilled employees as ‘a major challenge’. The Tech Nation Visa will continue to help to bring world-leading talent to the UK to help meet this challenge.
